Islamorada: procedure for filling council vacancies over half a term
Islamorada, Village of Islands village · November 3, 2026
The question on your ballot
The Village Charter provides that if a councilmember vacancy occurs and 50 percent or more of the term remains the remaining councilmembers must appoint a replacement by majority vote. In this scenario, the proposed amendment requires the remaining Councilmembers to appoint an interim councilmember within 30 days and call a special election within 6 months to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the unexpired term. Shall the above described Charter amendment be adopted?
In plain language
A VoterDecoder summary of the official measure text.
The Village Charter says that if a council seat becomes vacant with 50 percent or more of the term remaining, the remaining council members appoint a replacement by majority vote. This charter amendment changes that process for this situation. The remaining council members would appoint an interim council member within 30 days. They would also call a special election within 6 months to fill the rest of the unexpired term. A YES vote adopts this amendment. A NO vote keeps the current appointment process.
