Extend deadline for special elections to fill vacancies

South Miami city · November 3, 2026

The question on your ballot

The Charter currently requires that special elections to fill City Commission vacancies be held within 30 to 60 days, or 45 to 60 days, depending on the circumstances of the vacancy. Shall the Charter be amended to require that all such special elections be held not less than 60 nor more than 120 days after the vacancy occurs, subject to the requirements of state and county law?

In plain language

The South Miami charter currently requires special elections to fill City Commission vacancies within 30 to 60 days, or 45 to 60 days, depending on the circumstances. This amendment would require that all such special elections be held not less than 60 nor more than 120 days after the vacancy occurs. Those timing requirements would remain subject to state and county law. A YES vote adopts the 60-to-120-day window, while a NO vote keeps the current timing rules.
