Gainesville: fill city commission and mayor vacancies by appointment

Gainesville city · November 3, 2026

The question on your ballot

Shall the city charter be amended to provide that vacancies in the offices of mayor or city commission be filled by appointment by the remaining city commissioners until the next regular municipal election if the vacancy occurs with sufficient time before the candidate qualifying period for such election, and otherwise by appointment for the remainder of the unexpired term, as proposed by Ordinance No. 2026-165?

In plain language

A VoterDecoder summary of the official measure text.

Gainesville voters are asked whether to change the city charter so that vacancies in the offices of mayor or city commission are filled by appointment. The remaining city commissioners would make the appointment. If the vacancy occurs with enough time before candidate qualifying for the next regular election, the appointee would serve until that election. Otherwise, the appointee would serve the rest of the unexpired term. A YES vote approves this change, as proposed by Ordinance No. 2026-165. A NO vote means the charter is not amended this way.
