Thornton charter amendment: council members resign on declaring candidacy for other office

Thornton · November 3, 2026

The question on your ballot

Shall Section 4.5 of the Thornton City Charter be amended to require that any member of the Thornton City Council, including the Mayor, shall be deemed to have resigned and vacated the member's office upon formally declaring candidacy for any elected office other than Thornton City Council member or Mayor, including by filing a candidate affidavit, petition, or other official candidacy document required by law?

In plain language

A VoterDecoder summary of the official measure text.

Thornton Question 2A would change the city charter. Under the change, council members, including the Mayor, would be treated as having resigned when they run for another elected office. Formally declaring that candidacy would count. Filing a candidate affidavit, a petition, or another official candidacy document would also count. A YES vote adopts this rule. A NO vote keeps the current charter language.
