Measure J: Measure J – San Mateo County Charter Amendment Measure – Extension to Call a Special Election or Appoint

San Mateo County · San Mateo County · November 3, 2026

The question on your ballot

Shall the San Mateo County Charter be amended to extend the period in which the County Board of Supervisors is required to either call a special election or make an appointment in the event of a vacancy in an elected office other than the Board of Supervisors from 30 days to 60 days, and to require the Board to conduct at least one public meeting to receive public comment prior to any appointment?

In plain language

Measure J would change the San Mateo County Charter. The charter is the county's main set of rules. It covers what happens when an elected county office becomes empty. This rule does not apply to the Board of Supervisors itself. Right now, the Board has 30 days to either call a special election or appoint someone. A YES vote gives the Board 60 days instead. It also means the Board must hold at least one public meeting to hear from the public before it appoints anyone. A NO vote means these changes do not happen.
