Dipak Awasthi

Candidate for City Council (At-Large), Milpitas · Milpitas Planning Commissioner

Dipak Awasthi has lived in Milpitas for 25 years and owns a small business, a mini market, in the city. He has been involved in Milpitas city government since 2016, serving on the Sister Cities Commission and the Economic Development and Trade Commission, and currently serves on the Planning Commission, with a term expiring in December 2027.

Positions in brief

He calls affordable housing the biggest problem facing Milpitas and proposes a dedicated police department social-worker position to serve the unhoused population, alongside support for small businesses.

Awasthi says affordable housing is the city's biggest problem, citing the school district's difficulty retaining teachers due to housing costs, and commits to advocating for more units aimed at low- and middle-income residents. On public safety, he has raised catalytic converter theft as a concern and proposed creating a dedicated social-worker position within the police department to assist the unhoused and reduce unnecessary police interventions. On the economy, he draws on his small-business and Economic Development Commission experience to pledge support for existing businesses and efforts to attract new ones. He describes himself as a 'unity candidate' focused on data-driven, collaborative decision-making.
