Seema Kanani
Candidate for City Council (At-Large), Milpitas · Clinical Social Worker
Seema Kanani has spent 19 years working in frontline healthcare as a licensed clinical social worker for Kaiser Permanente. She serves on the executive board of the Service Employees International Union - United Healthcare Workers West, and took part in the 2023 Kaiser workers' strike as a strike captain and member of the social-worker chapter's bargaining team. She has received the sole endorsement of the South Bay AFL-CIO Labor Council for the Milpitas City Council at-large seat.
Positions in brief
She wants housing solutions that focus on affordability for essential workers, seniors, and lower-income families, and centers public safety on adequate staffing, employee retention, and neighborhood improvements like street lighting and park upgrades.
Kanani has said essential workers, seniors, and lower-income families are being priced out of Milpitas, and favors addressing affordability directly rather than simply building more units. On public safety, her approach centers on adequate staffing and employee retention for city workers, along with street-lighting assessments and park facility improvements. She has also called for the city to move past recent internal conflict on the council and focus on collaborative governance, and prioritizes direct community outreach through forums.
