Rico E. Medina
Candidate for Mayor, San Bruno · Mayor, City of San Bruno
Rico Medina is a third-generation, lifelong resident of San Bruno who has worked for the city's Parks and Recreation department. He was first elected to the San Bruno City Council in 2005 and has served continuously since, including an earlier term as mayor beginning in 2017. He was elected mayor again in November 2024. He has also represented the city on regional bodies including the Airport Community Roundtable, the Airport Land Use Committee, the Association of Bay Area Governments, and the Peninsula Traffic Congestion Relief Alliance.
Positions in brief
Medina points to his experience steering San Bruno through crises, including the PG&E pipeline explosion and shooting incidents, as preparation for the city's next chapter, while pushing for stronger emergency preparedness and jump-starting stalled housing and economic development.
As mayor, Medina has cited his role managing the aftermath of San Bruno's PG&E pipeline explosion, shooting incidents at YouTube's campus and the Tanforan mall, and a tear-gas incident near a local school, saying the experience gained handling those crises will help the city navigate future uncertainty. He has prioritized safety preparedness and new fare gates at the local BART station, and has acknowledged alongside fellow council members that housing and economic development have stalled in San Bruno, calling for the council to facilitate more responsible growth. He has also pushed to convert unused community-service hours into funding for wildfire mitigation work in the city's canyon areas.
