Albert Chow

Candidate for San Francisco County Supervisorial District 4

Albert Chow is a lifelong Sunset District figure. His family opened Great Wall Hardware on Taraval Street in 1978. He now runs the store. He is rebuilding it after it was destroyed by arson in 2024. He has led the People of Parkside Sunset group for about 14 years. This group is known as POPS. He has worked with local police on public-safety issues. He has organized community events, such as movie nights and night markets. He helped start the Sunset farmers market. He also helped start the Irving Street Night Market. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he worked with then-Supervisor Gordon Mar's office. Together, they got protective equipment to neighborhood merchants. They also gave merchants guidance. Chow was active in the campaign to recall former District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio. He was also active in the push to reopen the Upper Great Highway to cars. He was reportedly on Mayor Daniel Lurie's shortlist. This was to fill the resulting vacancy. Lurie appointed Alan Wong instead.

Positions in brief

Chow's campaign centers on a fully staffed police department. He also wants stronger schools. He wants to keep the Upper Great Highway open to cars. He wants neighborhood residents to have more say. This would come before major zoning changes.

Chow says a fully staffed San Francisco Police Department is a top priority. He also wants better math and algebra instruction, starting in junior high. He supported reopening the Upper Great Highway to vehicle traffic. He said he wished a ballot measure had settled the question directly. He criticized Supervisor Alan Wong on one vote. Wong voted for Mayor Lurie's Family Zoning Plan the day after being sworn in. Chow says Wong did not first poll the neighborhood. Still, Chow says he is not opposed to changing height limits, if done thoughtfully. He wants to avoid triggering a state builder's remedy. He says that could threaten San Francisco's distinct architecture and neighborhoods.
