Jayshawn Johnson

Candidate for City Council (At-Large), Adelanto · Appointed Planning Commissioner

Jayshawn Johnson has served on the City of Adelanto's Planning Commission, including previously as vice-chair, and continues as an appointed commissioner today. In 2020, he cast the panel's only vote against a proposal to expand a private immigration-detention facility's capacity in the city, saying he felt like "a pawn in a larger scheme, wherein which I have likely only scratched the surface" regarding the company's influence on local politics. He was removed from his commission post shortly afterward, a move immigrant-rights advocates characterized as retaliatory; he has since continued serving on the commission, with a term through November 2026.

Positions in brief

Johnson's public record centers on his Planning Commission service and a 2020 stand against a controversial detention-facility expansion; no additional campaign platform was found in available sources.

As the lone dissenting vote on a proposal to expand a private detention facility's capacity, Johnson said he felt like "a pawn in a larger scheme, wherein which I have likely only scratched the surface," a remark widely read as criticizing the company's influence on Adelanto politics. He was removed from his commission seat afterward, which immigrant-rights advocates called retaliation, but continues to serve on the Planning Commission today, with a term through November 2026.
