Peter Szalai
Candidate for Mayor, Salinas · Retired Educator
Peter Szalai is a retired educator with nearly 40 years in public education, having worked as a middle school teacher and as an administrator of teaching and learning. He served 11 years as the local president of his teachers' union, where he managed contract negotiations and advocated at the state and national levels. Szalai has ties to Salinas dating back to 1960, when his family lived there during his father's military service; he returned to the area in 2019 to care for his mother on the family's North Salinas property. In retirement, he has served on the city's Measure E and Measure G Sales Tax Oversight Committees.
Positions in brief
Szalai's central focus is the city's budget and long-neglected infrastructure — streets, sidewalks, sewer systems and streetlights — and separating essential city needs from politically motivated spending.
Szalai says he got involved after watching basic city responsibilities go unmet while spending kept growing, pointing to broken sidewalks, deteriorating streets, aging sewer systems and streetlights as concrete problems he says the city should fix before pursuing more speculative projects. He has attended the city's Infrastructure Summit, which covered federal and state funding for local transportation, water and sewer projects and public-private financing partnerships. He describes his approach as that of "a fair arbiter" with "no narrow agenda" who has "served no cabal of wealthy donors," citing his largely self-funded campaign. His stated long-term vision is for Salinas to be "the jewel of Monterey County...clean, safe, welcoming, economically-vibrant, a city that provides services equitably throughout the six districts and cares about its neighborhoods."
