Kevin J. Hanley
Candidate for City Council Member, Pacific Grove, District 1 · Retired Economics Instructor
Kevin Hanley is a retired economics instructor who moved to Pacific Grove six years ago after previously serving as a nonpartisan mayor and councilmember in Auburn, California, and as a naval officer. His career also includes work as a Chief Health Policy Consultant in the California Legislature and as a Chamber of Commerce CEO, in addition to teaching economics.
Positions in brief
Hanley's platform centers on fiscal responsibility and city infrastructure, criticizing what he calls the current council's failure to address beach erosion, fire risk, road repair, downtown revitalization and a growing budget deficit.
In his candidate statement, Hanley says the council has no plan to shore up the eroding beach path along Ocean View Boulevard, has done nothing to prevent catastrophic fire risk at George Washington Park, has let road and sidewalk repair go unaddressed, lacks a downtown revitalization plan, has not addressed frequent winter power outages, and has let speeding vehicles go unenforced. He says the city has run a $2 million budget deficit and dwindling emergency reserves despite substantial property tax, hotel tax and a 9.25% sales tax, and notes that voters rejected the council's proposed 135% pay raise. He points to his record as a nonpartisan mayor and councilmember in Auburn, where he says he helped revitalize the business district, lowered fire risk, and balanced the budget for 12 consecutive years, and pledges similar energetic, transparent, fiscally responsible leadership for Pacific Grove.
