Felipe Rojas-Flores
Candidate for City Council Member, Merced, District 2 · Legal Aid Attorney
Felipe Rojas-Flores is a Merced native and graduate of Merced High School and UC Merced who attended law school in Baton Rouge, Louisiana before returning home to practice law. He works as an attorney at California Rural Legal Assistance, representing low-income farmworkers.
Positions in brief
Rojas-Flores has called for more proactive city leadership, citing zoning changes to enable mixed-use affordable housing, regular constituent office hours, traffic safety, and support for small businesses.
He has pointed to the former Sears building at Merced Mall as a potential site for mixed-use apartments and retail, argued the city council should be 'active, proactive, and not just responding to situations that arise,' and proposed regular virtual or in-person office hours to increase communication with residents. He has also cited traffic safety, support for existing small businesses over outside recruitment, and community-building initiatives such as adopting a city flag.
On the issues
- Housing & Homelessness
Says he feels priced out of his own hometown and wants the city to plan proactively for housing, including rezoning underused commercial sites for mixed-use housing.
“I generally right now feel priced out of my hometown.”
Source → - Economy & Jobs
Favors growing jobs by supporting existing local small businesses rather than focusing mainly on attracting outside employers.
“The best way, I think, to get jobs here is to create them.”
Source → - Government, Elections & Democracy
Wants a city council that acts proactively on issues rather than only responding after problems arise, and believes elected officials respond mainly when residents vote and speak up.
