John Strangio
Candidate for City Council (At-Large), Ukiah · BUSINESS OWNER
John Strangio is a lifelong Ukiah resident, small-business owner, and former fire captain who owns the Ukiah Valley Athletic Club and previously served four years on the Redwood Valley-Calpella Fire District board. He has attended school, worked, raised his family, and built his business in Ukiah.
Positions in brief
He emphasizes expanding market-level housing, pairing compassion with accountability on homelessness and mental health, supporting local businesses, and running city government more openly.
Strangio says he is running because he loves Ukiah's people, small businesses, and community spirit. On homelessness and mental health, he advocates for combining compassion with accountability, drawing on his fire-service background and personal experience with PTSD, and wants agencies across government levels to find solutions while keeping public spaces safe. On housing, he wants to expand quality, market-level housing so families can afford to remain in Ukiah, supporting both first-time buyers and existing residents. On the economy, he stresses supporting local businesses, attracting new enterprises, and reviving vacant storefronts to create jobs. He commits to transparent leadership, saying decisions should be made openly rather than behind closed doors. In response to specific voter questions he has said he supports Flock license-plate cameras with proper oversight, favors limiting rather than banning data centers, opposes current annexation proposals, favors business-friendly downtown development, leans toward demolishing the Palace Hotel, and has questioned the effectiveness of the current district supervisor.
