Joong Kim
Candidate for City Council (At-Large), Calexico · Businessman
Joong Kim is a business owner who has lived in Calexico for more than 40 years, describing it as his second hometown. He previously served on the Calexico City Council, including as Mayor/Chairman for the 2015-2016 term. He is now seeking to serve on the council again.
Positions in brief
Kim's platform centers on lowering water rates, fixing deteriorated streets, boosting police staffing, and running what he calls a clean, independent city government.
Kim has proposed cutting water rates by 30 to 50%, rather than raising them. He has pointed to deteriorating streets full of potholes as a priority for repair. On public safety, he has advocated for increased police funding, arguing the department's roughly 20 officers falls far short of a recommended staffing ratio closer to 60. He says he wants to run what he calls a clean government free of the personal favoritism he says hampered his prior term, and encourages voters to get more involved in local elections as a way to reform city government.
