Daria Wrubel

Candidate for City Council Member, Berkeley, District 1 · Youth Therapist

Daria Wrubel was born and raised in Berkeley by a single mother, an activist and public school secretary, in a rent-controlled apartment. She has lived in District One for twenty years with her daughter and husband. Early in her career she worked as an educator and horticulturist in Thousand Oaks Elementary School's edible schoolyard program, teaching nutrition and land stewardship. She later worked as a union organizer with the California Federation of Teachers, where she helped stop layoffs of co-workers and raised union participation from 76% to over 97%. About twenty years after her undergraduate degree, she returned to school for a degree in counseling psychology focused on youth and young adults, and now operates a private counseling practice in Berkeley and Albany.

Positions in brief

Wrubel's platform calls for building more housing of all types while strengthening tenant protections, protecting public safety while defending civil liberties, and improving city services including mental health and homelessness support.

Wrubel says Berkeley should build more of every type of housing, including permanent supportive and market-rate units, while protecting tenants already living in their homes through an all-of-the-above approach to the housing crisis. On public safety, she wants Berkeley to be safe for everyone without surveilling or criminalizing the community, prioritizing research-based policy over fear-based approaches. She also calls for competent and compassionate city government that delivers infrastructure, transit, and small-business support alongside mental health and homelessness services, and has pledged to remove AI surveillance (Flock) cameras and protect residents from federal immigration enforcement.
