Jon Destin
Candidate for City Council (At-Large), Albany · Albany Business Owner
Jon Destin immigrated to the United States as a child, was educated here, and worked as a teacher before building his own small business, which he has run for nearly two decades. He was named Albany's 2026 Citizen of the Year. He has served as President of the Albany Community Foundation, sits on the YMCA board, and was a trustee of the Albany Education Foundation for a decade.
Positions in brief
Focuses on redeveloping the Golden Gate Fields waterfront into parkland, protecting the city budget through the racetrack's revenue transition, transportation improvements, climate action, and expanding required affordable housing.
Destin wants to develop the Golden Gate Fields racetrack site into a park while addressing the roughly $2 million in annual tax revenue the city stands to lose from the closure. He wants to protect core city services and plan responsibly for the budget transition, improve streets for pedestrians, cyclists, drivers, and people with mobility needs, support safe routes to school and prevent school funding losses during the transition, build on Albany's electrification and rebate programs, and facilitate development of the 486 affordable housing units the city must plan for by 2031. He also prioritizes maintaining accessible services for seniors aging in place, such as sidewalk repairs and paramedic response.
