Naindeep Singh
Candidate for City Council Member, Fresno, District 1 · Nonprofit Director/Trustee
Naindeep Singh is a lifelong Fresno resident who works as an educator and serves as executive director of the Jakara Movement, a Fresno-based nonprofit he says has brought millions of dollars of investment into the Valley and opened job and educational opportunities for young people. He is a member of the Central Unified School District Board of Trustees, representing Trustee Area 7 since 2018, where he oversees a roughly $300 million public school budget. He has authored statewide legislation expanding bilingual services and has advocated for workers against wage theft.
Positions in brief
Singh is campaigning on an affordability agenda covering housing, utility costs, and homelessness services, along with a sanctuary-city policy and a resident-driven city budget process.
Singh's platform centers on lowering everyday costs, including capping utility rate hikes and requiring audits before increases. On housing and homelessness, he supports a Bridge Grant Fund to help residents cover rental arrears before eviction, wants to expand the city's Affordable Housing Trust Fund, and has called for greater mental-health services for people experiencing homelessness. He has pledged to push for Fresno to adopt a formal sanctuary-city policy ending local cooperation with ICE and to expand legal aid and know-your-rights resources for immigrant and LGBTQIA+ residents. On public safety, he emphasizes community-based approaches alongside policing. He has proposed a 'People's Budget' giving residents a direct role in city spending decisions, ethics and transparency reforms, streamlined small-business permitting, and infrastructure investment in potholes, sidewalks, and street lighting.
