Francisco Tamayo

Candidate for Mayor, Chula Vista

Tamayo, a registered Democrat, immigrated to Chula Vista from Mexico as a child and is now a naturalized U.S. citizen. He holds an associate's degree from Southwestern College and a master's degree from Pittsburgh State University. He works as Director of Information Technology and Security at Calbright College, an online community college, and has served as a trustee on the Chula Vista Elementary School District board since 2014.

Positions in brief

Tamayo's platform centers on affordability, including expanding first-time homebuyer assistance and streamlining development, alongside more mental-health and public-safety resources for Chula Vista neighborhoods.

Tamayo says the Latino community fears immigration enforcement near schools, with parents afraid to send their children to class, and has criticized the incumbent mayor for not addressing those concerns. On affordability, he points to a roughly $750,000 median home price and wants to raise income limits on first-time homebuyer assistance programs and streamline development using pre-approved building plans, aiming development at working families and public employees like firefighters, nurses, and teachers rather than luxury projects — he has criticized the $400-a-night Gaylord Resort on similar grounds. On homelessness, he says he would push county agencies for more mental health services, drug rehabilitation, and protective shelters, and wants to add more police officers in Chula Vista neighborhoods.
