Mark Rendon

Candidate for Assembly District 14

Mark Rendon spells his name Rendón. He is the Green Party candidate for California Assembly District 14. It is a district in the East Bay. It covers Berkeley, Albany, Kensington, and El Cerrito. It also covers Richmond, San Pablo, Pinole, and Hercules. It covers Piedmont too, and part of North Oakland. His campaign biography says he was born in Sacramento, California. He grew up in Washington, D.C. He earned a bachelor's degree in music, from the Manhattan School of Music. He came back to California in 1989. Then he earned a master's degree in education, from UC Berkeley. Rendon taught music in the Oakland Unified School District, for 29 years. He is now retired from that job. He was an active member of a group, the Oakland Education Association. He served as a school site rep there, and as an Executive Board member. He was also the treasurer, and the secretary. Later he spoke for the union on a state council, run by the California Teachers Association. There, he started the CTA's Green Party caucus. In 2001, he organized teachers and parents, in a fight against toxic pesticides. Their work led Oakland Unified to adopt a new plan, called Integrated Pest Management. It ended the use of toxic pesticides in the district's schools. He has been a member of the Green Party since the early 1990s. No prior elected office for him was found. This looks like his first run for public office. In the primary on June 2, 2026, Rendon came in second, out of three people running. The certified Statement of Vote gives him 12,939 votes (10.0%). The Democratic incumbent, Buffy Wicks, came in first with 105,311 votes (81.2%). The Republican, Borgar Solnordal, came in third with 11,376 votes (8.8%). Green sources say he is only the seventh California Green ever to reach a state or federal general election. That is true since the top-two primary system began, in 2012. He will face Wicks in the general election, on November 3, 2026. Home: he lives in the Berkeley area, in Alameda County, California. Occupation: he is a retired music teacher, with 29 years at Oakland Unified. He is also a musician. Prior office: no prior elected office was found for him. He did hold some union roles though. These include Executive Board member, treasurer, and secretary, for the Oakland Education Association. He was also a rep on the CTA State Council.
