Abigail "Abbie" Strickland
Candidate for City Council (At-Large), Arcata
Abigail "Abbie" Strickland is a transportation planner who has lived in Arcata for more than eight years. She was raised in a low-income family that experienced housing insecurity and was affected by substance abuse. She graduated from Humboldt State University in 2020 with a degree in Planning and Policy and has worked as a local land use and transportation planner for six years. For the past three years she has served on Arcata's Planning Commission, helping shape long-term planning policies and decisions on responsible growth.
In her official candidate statement, Strickland says her upbringing in a low-income family that faced housing insecurity and substance abuse shaped her understanding of the challenges many families face. She frames her candidacy around collaborative leadership and making sure every community member is heard "regardless of their background, circumstances, or status." Her stated priorities are expanding housing affordability, supporting local businesses, protecting natural resources, and strengthening services for the community's most vulnerable members, including better access to mental health care, medical services, and resources for at-risk youth. She also commits to serving with integrity and transparency.
