Daniel H. BrombergIncumbent
Candidate for Court of Appeal Justice, California Court of Appeal, Sixth Appellate District, Seat 2
Daniel H. Bromberg has served as an Associate Justice of the California Court of Appeal, Sixth Appellate District, in San Jose, since January 2023. He graduated summa cum laude, with a B.A. in history, from Yale University. He graduated magna cum laude, with a J.D., from Harvard Law School. There, he was a member of the Harvard Law Review. He was a clerk for Judge Louis F. Oberdorfer of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. He also clerked for Judge A. Raymond Randolph of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. Bromberg began his career as an associate at a firm called Cahill Gordon & Reindel, in New York, working mostly on First Amendment matters. He then became a partner in the appellate practice at a firm called Jones Day, in Washington, D.C. In 2005, he moved to California to join a firm called Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan. There, he helped start the firm's appellate practice group. He served as a deputy legal affairs secretary in the office of Gov. Gavin Newsom, from 2019 to 2021. He was then a partner at a firm called Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman, until he was picked for the bench. Gov. Newsom put his name up for the Sixth District Court of Appeal on November 7, 2022. The Commission on Judicial Appointments confirmed him on January 13, 2023, and he took his oath on January 18, 2023. It is not common for a Court of Appeal justice to come to the bench right from appellate practice, rather than from a trial court, but that is the path Bromberg took. His term expires in January 2027, so he faces his first retention vote on the November 3, 2026 ballot. If most voters mark yes, he keeps his seat.
