Joshua GrobanIncumbent
Candidate for Associate Justice, California Supreme Court, Seat 5
Joshua P. Groban is an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of California. He was born August 15, 1973. He grew up in San Diego. He attended public schools there. He earned his bachelor's degree from Stanford University, with honors and distinction. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School, cum laude. He then clerked for Judge William C. Conner. Conner served on the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. In private practice, Groban focused on complex civil litigation. He worked on antitrust cases, internal investigations, and intellectual property. From 2011 to 2018, he was senior advisor to Governor Jerry Brown. He oversaw the Governor's judicial appointments process. That process covered roughly 600 judges statewide. Governor Brown nominated Groban to the California Supreme Court on November 14, 2018. The Commission on Judicial Appointments confirmed him on December 21, 2018. He was sworn in on January 3, 2019. He filled the seat left by Justice Kathryn M. Werdegar. Werdegar retired in 2017. Voters retained Groban in the November 2022 general election. His current term ends in early January 2027. That puts him on the November 3, 2026 ballot. The retention question is nonpartisan and unopposed. It is a yes-or-no vote on whether he stays on the court. A full term is 12 years if he is retained.
